The Maximum Piercing Number for some Classes of Convex Sets with the (4, 3)-property

چکیده
A finite collection C of closed convex sets in R is said to have a (p, q)-property if among any p members of C some q have a non-empty intersection, and |C| ≥ p. A piercing number of C is defined as the minimal number k such that there exists a k-element set which intersects every member of C. We focus on the simplest non-trivial case in R, i.e., p = 4 and q = 3. It is known that the maximum possible piercing number of a finite collection of closed convex sets in the plane with (4, 3)-property is at least 3 and at most 13. We consider the following three special types of collections of closed convex sets: segments in R, unit discs in the plane and positively homothetic triangles in the plane, in each case only those satisfying (4, 3)-property. We prove that the maximum possible piercing number is 2 for the collections of segments and 3 for the collections of the other two types.

Piercing Numbers for Balanced and Unbalanced Families
Given a finite family F of convex sets in R, we say that F has the (p, q)r property if for any p convex sets in F there are at least r q-tuples that have non empty intersection. The piercing number of F is the minimum number of points we need to intersect all the sets in F . In this paper we willl find some bounds for the piercing number of families of convex sets with (p, q)r properties.
متن کاملPiercing convex sets and the Hadwiger Debrunner (p, q)-problem
A family of sets has the (p, q) property if among any p members of the family some q have a nonempty intersection. It is shown that for every p ≥ q ≥ d + 1 there is a c = c(p, q, d) < ∞ such that for every family F of compact, convex sets in R which has the (p, q) property there is a set of at most c points in R that intersects each member of F . This settles an old problem of Hadwiger and Debr...
متن کاملQSAR studying of oxidation behavior of Benzoxazines as an important pharmaceutical property
In this work the electrooxidation half-wave potentials of some Benzoxazines were predicted from their structural molecular descriptors by using quantitative structure-property relationship (QSAR) approaches. The dataset consist the half-wave potential of 40 benzoxazine derivatives which were obtained by DC-polarography. Descriptors which were selected by stepwise multiple selection procedure ar...
متن کاملA convex combinatorial property of compact sets in the plane and its roots in lattice theory
K. Adaricheva and M. Bolat have recently proved that if $,mathcal U_0$ and $,mathcal U_1$ are circles in a triangle with vertices $A_0,A_1,A_2$, then there exist $jin {0,1,2}$ and $kin{0,1}$ such that $,mathcal U_{1-k}$ is included in the convex hull of $,mathcal U_kcup({A_0,A_1, A_2}setminus{A_j})$. One could say disks instead of circles. Here we prove the existence of such a $j$ and $k$ ...
متن کاملAbout an Erdős-Grünbaum Conjecture Concerning Piercing of Non-bounded Convex Sets
In this paper, we study the number of compact sets needed in an infinite family of convex sets with a local intersection structure to imply a bound on its piercing number, answering a conjecture of Erdős and Grünbaum. Namely, if in an infinite family of convex sets in Rd we know that out of every p there are q which are intersecting, we determine if having some compact sets implies a bound on t...
